Relationship with Extended Family After Divorce: A Closer Look at Contemporary Times
Relationship with Extended Family After Divorce: A Closer Look at Contemporary Times
This study by Dr. Selenga Gürmen and her colleagues examines interactions between extended families post-divorce today. While recent literature has focused more on the concept of grandparents, it has not appeared to focus specifically on the ongoing relationships of divorced individuals with extended family members.
Nowadays, joint custody practice is an arrangement that requires more interaction between parents and family elders.
Based on existing literature, this study examined the theme of extended family relationships, emotional closeness, and perceived influence in various post-divorce contexts.
The role of support received for divorce adjustment, ongoing relationships with ex-spouses, and extended family reactions to the divorce were also investigated.
The findings from this study overlap with some findings of the existing literature. However, there are also some other findings, particularly regarding the role of gender, that may indicate the effects of social changes, such as gender roles serving as motivating forces today.
