Family Therapy Approach to Social Crises

In this article, Dr. Selenga Gürmen and Dr. Pınar Mengüç discussed how complex social problems such as the Covid-19 Pandemic can be approached from the perspective of Family Therapy, which adopts the systemic perspective.

Systems theory argues that the family is a system and contains subsystems within itself.

The family is constantly interacting within itself, with the other systems it is in, and with the people the system hosts. This article highlights the resemblance between a family and complex societal structure and offers family therapy to be a valuable tool for addressing social crises' emotional and relational effects.

Family therapy can help build stronger, more cohesive societies by promoting understanding, empathy, and resilience within families and communities. Common factors in Family Therapy are adapted to social change.

The factors that lead to a change in therapy are discussed as hope, models and techniques, and relationship with the therapist and client factors. In its adaptation to social change, hope, models and techniques, relationship with the leader, and community factors are discussed.

Further, it can be said that leaders should take on the role of the therapist. As a result, it has been argued that multiple methods and strategies are more effective than a single way or method to achieve collective behavioral change in society during a crisis.
